JOST Truck Stop #08: Adjust locking mechanism on fifth wheel coupling

Have you already seen the latest episode of JOST Truck Stop? This time we show you how you can easily adjust the lock on our fifth wheel couplings. See for yourself!

In this episode, we show you how to adjust the lock on a JOST fifth wheel coupling. With increasing use, our JOST fifth wheel couplings also show signs of wear.  This often affects the locking hook. However, you can easily adjust the locking mechanism as long as the wear is still within the tolerance range. This reduces the play of the king pin in the fifth wheel coupling and the trailer is optimally coupled again. This ensures a smooth and safe ride, and above all prevents rapid wear of the components.

And this is how it is done:

  • As always, remember: safety first! Please be sure to follow the safety instructions in the assembly and operating instructions.
  • To adjust the lock, first loosen the lock nut on the adjustment screw with the coupling open and unscrew the screw by 15 turns.
  • Then use the JOST adjustment master to close the fifth wheel coupling again.
  • Then pull the pull handle slightly outwards and swing it forwards and hold it - you need two people to do this. Be careful here, because the lock must not be loosened again in this step.
  • Then screw the adjustment screw back in until the pull handle starts to move.
  • To set the recommended basic play of 0.3 mm, screw in the adjusting screw by 1.5 turns more. Then secure it with the lock nut.
  • Finally, you must of course carry out another function check with the JOST adjustment master and grease the lock well before you go back on the road.
